Scrap Metal & Cars
What is car scrapping?
Scrapping a car means legally disposing of a vehicle that is no longer roadworthy or needed. The process involves selling it to GD’s authorised treatment facility (ATF) where it is dismantled, recycled, or destroyed.
How do I scrap my car legally in the UK?
Find an ATF (Authorised Treatment Facility) – These are government-approved scrapyards or breakers that can issue a Certificate of Destruction. See ours here (hyper link).
Ask us for a quote:
- We provides rough quotes via email or phone.
Arrange collection or delivery – You can drop the car off yourself or arrange for it to be collected by our vehicle collection team.
We require the following documentation:
- Give us your V5C (log book) or fill out section 9 (for older V5Cs) or section 4 (for newer versions).
- Photographic ID (either a photo driving licence or a passport / ID card)
- A recent utility bill / official document (less than 3 months old)
Notify the DVLA
- You can do this online or by post. You’ll stop being responsible for the vehicle once DVLA is notified.
What documents do I need?
V5C logbook (preferred but not essential)
Photo ID (e.g., driving licence or passport)
A recent utility bill / official document (less than 3 months old)
Any service history or MOTs (optional)
What if I’ve lost my V5C?
You can still scrap your car without the V5C. You’ll need to write to the DVLA including your name, address, vehicle registration number, and add GD’s details. We provide receipts as well for proof of sale.
Who notifies DVLA for scrapping a car?
NEED TO DOUBLE CHECK THIS
Will I get money for scrapping my car?
Yes, GD pays for scrap vehicles. The amount depends on your car’s make, weight, condition, and current scrap metal prices. Cash payments for scrap metal, including scrap vehicles, was made illegal in 2012. Any payment will be made in the form of a BACS transfer, directly into your bank account, or onto a pre-loaded ‘Bread’ payment card.
How do I arrange collection of my scrap car?
We will accept vehicles brought directly to the site. Alternatively, give us a call to find out if we can run a collection service to your location. Call us on 01495 762611 or fill out our contact form to find out more.
